IBC Umbrella BrigadeMardi Gras! Galveston roars back onto the island from February 10th through the 21st and brings with it a ton of great parades, balls and special events. If you’ve not gotten your bead throwing arm limbered up, a few new dance moves worked out or your favorite parade watching spot reserved, now’s the time!

One of the parade highlights last year was the new Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade. This parade gives everyone an opportunity to be part of the Mardi Gras experience and is NOT to be missed. More than 750 people came together in 2011 to set a Guinness Book of World Record for the largest group of people performing the Hokey Pokey at the same time. We broke the record once and we want to break it again this year and need your help!

Islander By Choice has a spot reserved for this year’s parade and we want you to join us. The parade starts at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, February 10th and the rules are simple:

  1. Sign up in advance by giving us your name and email address below or email your info to us
  2. Get an umbrella and decorate it however you would like
  3. Swing by our Facebook event and talk with other revelers and get ready for a great Mardi Gras time!

As an added bonus, anyone showing up with a decorated umbrella will get in FREE to the Uptown Entertainment District that Friday night. We’ll have more information as we get closer to the big event, for now though, here’s a video of last year’s record breaking dance.

Aside from being completely unfamiliar with anything regarding large bodies of water, fishing or even possessing a proficient ability to swim (boy can he float though!) he none the less became attracted to Galveston and all the history, design, people and uniqueness it entails. Will is the Creative Director and owner of Willthing, a graphic design and Web site development company, co-owner of Islander By Choice, LLC and the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Galveston Historical Foundation.
